Tiger mosquitoes in Switzerland

Have you heard about tiger mosquitoes?

They are recognised by their black and white striped legs and bodies. They are known to transmit viruses such as dengue fever, yellow fever or the West Nile virus. They are natives of South East Asia but were discovered in Switzerland (Ticino) the first time in 2003. They are brought into the country in cars, exotic plants and even the trade with used car tyres.

Swiss authorities have started to the “hunt” for the tiger mosquitoes and have set up 250 traps for female tiger mosquitoes to lay their eggs there. The goal of this action is to find out where the tiger mosquito spreads and to subsequently fight against it.
