Cranberries – Beneficial for UTIs or Not?

It’s a common belief that cranberry juice helps in the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs) even though research has not been able to fully support this idea. A study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology suggests this could be a myth.

Don’t get me wrong, we are talking about cranberry juice here. In the study published, patients were given cranberry juice in the form of capsules and in a dose of two capsules twice daily. One of these capsules contains the equivalent of approx. 240 ml of cranberry juice. That’s a lot of cranberry juice but in an easy to take form.

With antibiotic resistance being today’s challenge in the treatment of UTIs, doctors are more reluctant to prescribe antibiotics. And that is good so. As stated in the article, treatment of UTIs can be complicated.
Alternative treatments have become more and more important. Aside from high doses of cranberry juice, probiotics are considered a good and safe treatment.
