A Myth: Detox & Cleansing

I am no expert on nutrition but do my share of reading and learning about it. I have always wondered what people actually mean by cleansing your body. As a medical student I learnt that our kidneys and our liver do great jobs at “cleansing” and “detoxing” our body. But today, detoxification diets are incredibly popular, and just putting these two key words into your google search, you get more than 16 million hits. Where does this popularity come from? After all, there is no noteworthy evidence that such diets really do eliminate toxins from our body. In the end it’s all about nutrition. I am a firm believer that if you eat a healthy, well balanced diet, and avoid the processed food our supermarkets are now swamped with, detox should not be necessary.

But again, not being an expert, I was very happy to come across this blog by Sandra Mikhail, an accredited dietitian with a bachelor degree in Nutrition & Dietetics and master degree from the ETH in Zürich in Nutrition & Health. Read here what a nutrition expert thinks of detox and body cleansing.

I will happily continue to drink my smoothies, including green ones, just because I like the taste and it helps me to get my “five-a-day” but that’s the only reason to drink them.
